For the ninth consecutive semester, Murray State College continues to grow historically with an additional 6% increase in headcount over the prior spring semester. This amounts to an unprecedented 42% enrollment boom since 2021. Steady increases in retention and graduation rates show that more students are staying enrolled from start to finish — and succeeding along the way.
That success is driven not only by outcomes but also by a student-centered learning environment where students feel supported, welcomed and safe. Persistence at Murray State goes beyond academic flexibility and support services; it’s about creating a sense of belonging that helps students stay engaged and confident in their path forward.
“Persistence doesn’t happen by accident,” said Tracey Hickman, Murray State College Assistant Vice President of Academic Affairs. “The college’s Academic Resource Center provides students with the academic tools and support, such as tutoring and testing, that they need to stay on track. That support is a key reason more students are graduating.”
The strength of Murray State College lies in its ability to attract and retain students from all walks of life, meeting them where they are, helping them overcome challenges and supporting them as they work toward their goals.
Those efforts are translating into record-breaking results. Increased retention and completion rates led to the largest graduating class in the history of the college in 2024. That record was again broken in 2025. The college is on track to surpass last year’s graduating class, marking the largest sustained period of growth since the baby boomer generation entered college between 1964 and 1974.
Expanded programs and flexible learning options are creating more pathways for students to achieve their goals and prepare for the workforce — whether through a new certificate, an online degree or a career-focused program aligned with regional needs.
Every new program, every flexible learning opportunity, and every dedicated faculty and staff member plays a role in transforming lives.
Murray State’s growth in concurrent enrollment remains its primary driver, and the college’s online and Tishomingo campus enrollments continue to rise. Programs such as nursing, business, arts and sciences, health science, child development, and agriculture are also expanding, driving steady enrollment growth.
“We’re not just growing numbers — we’re growing impact,” said Murray State College Provost Becky Henthorn. “We’re meeting the demand for critical occupations in our region, and I’m incredibly proud of our faculty and staff’s work each day to support student success and strengthen the communities we serve.”
Murray State was recognized as an Opportunity College and University by the Carnegie Classifications, earning national distinction for its commitment to student success and upward economic mobility. The designation is part of Carnegie’s Student Access and Earning Classification, which identifies institutions that model student opportunity and achievement.
“This recognition reinforces the heart of our mission—providing educational experiences that create real opportunities,” said Dr. Tim Faltyn, Murray State College President. “Being named an Opportunity College highlights the impact we’re having on students’ lives and the communities we serve. We are proud to see these numbers, but even more so in our people and how they are changing lives for the better.”
