Murray State College has been recognized as an Opportunity College and University by the Carnegie Classifications, earning national distinction for its commitment to student success and upward economic mobility.
This prestigious designation, part of Carnegie’s newly launched Student Access and Earning Classification, identifies institutions that serve as models for fostering student opportunity and achievement.
“This achievement reflects the dedication and hard work of our faculty and staff,” said Becky Henthorn, Murray State College Provost. “From the classroom to advising and student support services, our team is committed to equipping students with the tools they need to succeed. We’ve made intentional efforts to increase retention and ensure that every student has a clear path forward. This recognition affirms that our work is making a difference.”
Out of more than 3,000 U.S. colleges and universities, only 479 institutions—approximately 16%—received the classification in 2025. Murray State College not only made the list but stood out with the highest overall score among the Oklahoma two-year colleges and the highest earnings ratio. Only six colleges in Oklahoma received the designation.
The classification evaluates the effectiveness of institutions in representing the demographics of their communities and comparing the earnings of their graduates to those of peers in the same region. It is designed to encourage collaboration and continuous improvement across higher education, with a shared focus on advancing student outcomes.
“This recognition reinforces the heart of our mission—providing educational experiences that lead to real opportunity,” said Dr. Tim Faltyn, Murray State College President. “Being named an Opportunity College highlights the impact we’re making in students’ lives and the communities we serve. It affirms our commitment to student-centered education that results in both personal and professional growth.”
Murray State College’s inclusion reflects its ongoing efforts to expand access, enhance student support and deliver career-focused programs that lead to long-term success.
