In its commitment to excellence for America’s premier Gunsmithing Program, Murray State College has named John Tremblay as the new Interim Gunsmithing Program Chair.

Tremblay joined Murray State College in 2014 as an adjunct instructor and became a full-time faculty member in 2016. He is a U.S. Army veteran who worked with a variety of firearms and missile systems throughout his military career and is also an alum of Murray State’s gunsmithing program.

“One of the things I appreciate most about gunsmithing is that there’s always something new to learn,” said Tremblay. “Helping students develop their skills and seeing their excitement as a project comes together keep me passionate about teaching. Serving as interim chair is an opportunity to give back to a program that has meant so much to me.”

Murray State’s Gunsmithing Program began in 1979 as an associate-level program and has earned a strong reputation for preparing skilled professionals for a competitive workforce, with a 100% employment rate upon graduation. In 2023, with support from the firearm and manufacturing industries, Murray State added America’s first and only bachelor’s degree in gunsmithing.

“As a longtime instructor and respected professional in the field, John brings valuable experience and insight to this leadership role,” said Becky Henthorn, Murray State College Provost. “His understanding of the program, industry connections and passion for student learning will help ensure continuity, quality and specialized instruction, as well as a stable environment of excellence for our students.”

Murray State has also named gunsmithing instructor Dan Thompson the Interim Gunsmithing Program Assistant Chair. Thompson, a Murray State alum, has been a part-time instructor since 2023. Additionally, three new faculty members from education and industry are anticipated to join the program in the next few weeks.

With strong new leadership, expert faculty, expanded curriculum offerings, industry-recognized certifications and a state-of-the-art facility opening in Fall 2026, the Murray State College Gunsmithing Program is embarking on a new era of excellence and opportunity.

“John’s and Dan’s dedication to the Gunsmithing Program ensures that adult students entering and continuing in the program will be poised to excel in the industry upon graduation,” said Dr. Tim Faltyn, Murray State College President. “We are committed to sustainably supporting the academic leadership of the institution and this program with the resources they need to provide the highest possible caliber of training for our students during their two- or four-year chapter here at Murray State.”
