Murray State College’s Gunsmithing program is continuing to gain momentum toward a new academic year and chapter of excellence with the addition of four exceptional team members.

Joining the program are faculty members Raymond Self, Jacob Nietert and Peter Schmidt, along with administrative assistant Shaun Harris, whose expertise and dedication will further strengthen one of the college's signature programs.

Self served as a gunsmithing faculty member from 2019 until his retirement in 2024. He served in the U.S. Army and U.S. Army Reserve for 29 years; 15 of those years, he was an Observer Controller and Trainer. Self is also one of Murray State’s NRA Summer Program instructors.

Nietert is a recent graduate of Murray State’s Bachelor of Applied Technology in Gunsmithing program and previously served as the program’s tool room technician.

Following his graduation in 2018, Schmidt spent two years at C. Sharps Arms in Montana specializing in stock-making. He also owns a gun shop focused on stock-making and firearm restoration and has served as both a Murray State NRA summer program coordinator and adjunct faculty member.

Their experience, dedication and passion for the craft will be a tremendous asset to our students."

Harris joins the program from outside the firearms industry. He holds a degree in legal studies from Amarillo College and previously worked in compliance for two tribal governments.

“I am thrilled to welcome Peter and Shaun to the gunsmithing program and to see Raymond and Jacob step into their new roles,” said John Tremblay, Murray State College Interim Gunsmithing Chair. “Peter will bring a modern approach and unique experience across multiple areas of the firearms industry to our classrooms. Shaun's educational background and professional experience make him exceptionally well qualified for this administrative role. Together, this team will strengthen our program and help shape the next generation of skilled gunsmiths.”
