On the first day of class, what should you do…..?

  • The student should familiarize themselves with the course by reading through the syllabus and going to the “Start Here” button on the left side of the course to get started. The “Start Here” button should lead the student through the first steps of the course.
  • It’s also good to review all the assignments the first day of class. This will give the student a good idea of what to expect in the online course.
  • It’s also a good idea to create a binder with the syllabus, course schedule, assignments, rubrics, and any other printed material that might help you stay organized.
  • Be sure to also check the technical requirements and that your computer will work with the tools your instructor is requiring you to use.
  • If you have questions after you have familiarized yourself with the course, don’t hesitate to contact your instructor by phone or email. You should be able to find this information in your Blackboard course under “Instructor Information” on the left hand side.

10 Tips to help you be successful during the rest of the semester

  1. Check your MSC email daily for any announcements and log into your course at least three times a week.
  2. Don’t procrastinate – if you wait until the last minute to do an assignment and the technology doesn’t work, the instructor might not let you turn in late work.
  3. Be familiar with all deadlines. Print off your course schedule and place it in your workspace or connect it to your calendar on your phone.
  4. Be able to communicate through writing.
  5. Communicate with your instructor whenever you are having problems.
  6. Communicate with your instructor if you are going to be gone and not logging in to your course.
  1. Check your grades often to make sure you are doing well in the class. If you are not, contact your instructor.
  2. Use proper grammar and spelling in discussion boards. Write your discussions in Word and spellcheck them before you post. Read the syllabus for discussion guidelines and Netiquette rules before submitting your work.
  3. Create a good study space by getting some peace and quiet, avoid online games, turn off your cell phone, and get comfortable. This will also help you stay organized.
  4. Stay motivated by blocking off times each week to study and work on your online course. If you get behind, it will be difficult to catch up in your course work. Managing your time wisely is important every week of the semester.
