Murray State College welcomes and students to campus for 2017-18 year

Murray State College welcomed back students on Monday, August 14, 2017, with faculty and staff arriving on campus a week earlier for all-employee meetings.

On Monday, August 7, the college welcomed new faculty and staff and presented length of service awards to current employees.  Employees receiving recognition for length of service were:

Debbie Reed, 30 years; Linda Taylor, 30 years; Greg Boyd, 20 years; Derinda Kennedy, 15 years; Alan Burris, 10 years; Mari Plumlee, 10 years.  Five-year awards were presented to Ronald Coppedge, Traci Cummings, Tammy Jackson, Rebecca Jacobs-Pollez, Marvin Leeper, Don Mercer, Paula Michael, Susan Sides and Christy Uzzel.

“Our faculty members are amazing, and it gives us all a great deal of pleasure and pride to see the commitment they have made to Murray State College and the students we serve,” MSC President Joy McDaniel said.

On Friday, August 11, approximately 500 new students arrived on campus for yearly symposium orientation activities.  The new student symposium offers an overview of programs and helps students create strategies for success.

This year’s symposium guest was Oklahoma artist and inspirational speaker Richard Hight.  Hight’s work hangs in more than 50 major universities and in numerous Fortune 500 companies.  Before addressing students, Hight took to the stage where he used colored chalk to draw on an oversized black fabric canvas.  His stunning portrait of an American eagle in flight took less than 15 minutes to complete and will remain on campus.

“Student needs are always our top priority, and Mr. Hight encouraged them to find their passion and follow their dreams.  He entertained and inspired us all,” MSC President Joy McDaniel said.

The 6 p.m. convocation ceremony was held in Fletcher Auditorium, and a Rock-the-Block celebration with local vendors, businesses and college clubs finished off the day’s symposium activities.
