Murray State College Veterinary Technology Students and Faculty Named Best of the Best

Students and faculty in the Murray State College Veterinary Technology Program were recognized with top honors at this year’s North American Veterinary Community (NAVC) conference in Orlando, Fla.

MSC students returned from February’s annual conference with the Student Chapter of the Year award.   Student group co-advisors Laura Sandmann and Debbie Reed were presented with the first-ever joint award as sponsors of Murray’s student group.

“We are so proud of our students.  They went after this award with a great deal of passion and determination.  It’s the first time MSC has submitted an application, and we are so pleased our students came out on top,” Sandmann said.

“It’s not a given that the advisor(s) who wins will be from the same college as the student group winner.  That makes our two awards so much more special.  We have a great group of students, and working with them is an outstanding experience.  This year’s timing was just right for a win,” Debbie Reed said.

With over 200 student chapters eligible to apply, groups were evaluated on promotion of veterinary technology, community services involvement, leadership, and participation in NAVTA projects.

“Our Veterinary Technology Program stands above others in the nation – especially faculty members Debbie Reed, Laura Sandmann, Dr. Katlyn Tyler, and Christen Puckett-Smith,” MSC President Joy McDaniel said.

“Laura Sandmann, who has been at MSC for more than 30 years, and Debbie Reed, with close to as many years’ service, have been instrumental in creating a program that stands out from others due to its unique setting, hands-on learning components, and a strong structure of student support. This group of students and faculty are to be congratulated on their outstanding accomplishments and this year’s top awards,” McDaniel added.

Completion of the Veterinary Technology Program at Murray State College leads to an Associate of Applied Science degree.  For information, contact Reed at or Sandmann at
