Murray State College pitching coach brings major league experience to southern Oklahoma

Robert Ellis, Murray State’s new pitching coach, spent almost 30 years in amateur and professional baseball before arriving in Tishomingo for the 2017-18 year.  Ellis, a native of Baton Rouge, La., is a former starting pitcher who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) between 1996 and 2003.

Ellis was selected by the Chicago White Sox in the 1990 MLB draft out of Louisiana’s Northwestern State University.  From 1991-1996, he pitched at five minor league levels including stints with New York-Penn League’s Utica Blue Sox, Gulf Coast League White Sox, Single-A Sarasota White Sox of the Florida State League, Single-A South Bend White Sox of the Mid West League, and Single-A Birmingham Barons of the Southern League.  He was traded to the California Angels for Pat Borders in 1996.

“We are extremely pleased to have Robert Ellis on staff at Murray State College.  His experience as a MLB player and a coach will be very beneficial for our students,” MSC President Joy McDaniel said.

Following a year with the Angels, Ellis moved on to the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Texas Rangers.  In a four-season career, Ellis posted a 7-7 record with 54 strikeouts and a 6.03 ERA in 118.0 innings.  Ellis also pitched in the International League for Cleveland and Philadelphia organizations.  His most notable outing was in 2001 as a member of the World Champion Arizona Diamondbacks.

“We’re looking forward to the coming season at Murray State College, and I am excited to get our players out there on the field.  Our team is comprised of many talented and dedicated student athletes who have trained hard and are really to compete,” Ellis said.

Ellis has coaching experience with Tyler Jr. College in Tyler, Texas, the New York Mets/Gulf Coast Mets, Honolulu Sharks/Hawaiian Winter League, Henderson Texas ISD, Central Heights ISD in Nacogdoches, Texas, and Panola College in Carthage, Texas.
