Murray State College 2018 Summer STEM Camp accepting applications
Eighth- and ninth- grade students from across Oklahoma will be selected to join the 2018 Murray State College Summer STEM Academy. The STEM Academy at Murray State College is a four-day commuter camp that promotes student understanding of, along with interest in, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) subjects through creative hands-on activities and local outings.
The camp is scheduled for July 23-26 at the University Center of Southern Oklahoma (UCSO) in Ardmore and is free of charge. A bus will transport Tishomingo students to Ardmore at 9 a.m. each day and return to Tishomingo at 5 p.m. daily. Participants not using college transportation should report to UCSO at 10 a.m. each day. Applications can be found on the MSC website at mscok.edu.
“STEM subjects have always been important building blocks for students. We’ve been given a great opportunity through the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education grant to expose pre-college students to new ways of exploring and learning more about these important subjects in a fun and creative atmosphere,” MSC President Joy McDaniel said.
Campers will enjoy a full schedule each day, including nature outings, bridge building, special presentations, forensics and more. Through classroom learning opportunities and multi-disciplinary studies integrated with technology, student campers will develop new skills and learn new ways of processing STEM subjects while learning and making new friends.
“Our focus is on creating opportunities for students by exposing them to STEM subjects in a unique setting that takes into consideration a variety of learning styles and knowledge levels. STEM-subject mastery is very important in today’s job market, and we want to engage students early on in areas which will be important as they set their education and career goals,” said Malynda Cobb, director of the STEM academy.
